In my research for the exhibition Sotaren, I encountered the executioner Rackaren early on, also known as Flåbusen or Nattmannen.
Rackaren was a person whom society labeled as unclean and worthless, no matter who he might have been if he had had the same opportunities as others. It was not just corpses, carcasses, and garbage disposal that fell on the Rackarens lottery, but more or less the entire city's shit. This also meant such a vital sweep, which gives him a clear role in the chimney sweep profession's more than millennial history.
Some of the rascals originated from the traveling people, which is why the chimney sweeps' own secret language is based to some extent in Romani. Today, the word rackare has a more pleasant tone, and when I call my dog byracka I do it with love. Sebastian Dahlberg from Kinnekulle, together with me as a photographer, wanted to portray an individual who was so valuable, but still rated as worthless, with a sense of strength and melancholy in the pictures.
Rackaren series is a tribute from us to the incredible craftsmanship of these ancient craftsmen. A pride of the character that meets no counterpart ...
